Kerr Clinches Semi-Final Spot

PERTH, Australia - In a match defined by grit and clinical precision, the CommBank Matildas have punched their ticket to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup semi-finals. A 2-1 victory over a relentless Korea DPR on Friday night at a sold-out Perth Rectangular Stadium (HBF Park) did more than just advance the hosts; it officially secured Australia's qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

While North Korea dominated much of the possession, the Matildas leaned on their world-class stars and a resilient defense to weather the storm.

The tone was set early in the 9th minute. Captain Sam Kerr, pressing high with trademark intensity, forced a turnover from the North Korean backline. Her vision found Alanna Kennedy on the edge of the area, who rifled a left-footed strike into the top corner. It was Kennedy’s fifth goal of the tournament, continuing her sensational form.

Despite the early lead, the visitors responded with a "footballing masterclass," controlling 62% of the ball and peppering the Australian goal. Only the heroics of goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold and the woodwork kept the Matildas ahead at the break.

Just two minutes into the second half (47'), the 16,466 fans in attendance witnessed the moment they came for. Following a rapid breakaway, Sam Kerr received the ball in the box and unleashed a "howitzer" of a strike that left the North Korean keeper with no chance. It was Kerr’s fifth goal in five consecutive games in her hometown of Perth, a script that couldn't have been written any better.

The "secretive powerhouse" of North Korea refused to go quietly. Chae Un Yong pulled one back in the 65th minute, setting up a frantic final half-hour. North Korea finished the game with 21 shots to Australia’s two, but the Matildas' defense led by Clare Hunt and Winonah Heatley held firm under immense pressure.

Australia will now move to Optus Stadium for the semi-final on Tuesday, March 17, where they will face the winner of the quarter-final between China PR and Chinese Taipei.
