China and Korea Republic Storm into WAC 2026 Semis

SYDNEY/PERTH, Australia - The road to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup just got a lot clearer for two of Asia’s most storied programs. In a dramatic Saturday of knockout football, defending champions China PR and a clinical Korea Republic secured their spots in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 semi-finals, booking their tickets to Brazil in the process.

While their paths to the final four looked very different, the result remains the same: the "Steel Roses" and the "Taegeuk Ladies" are officially among the elite.

In Perth, the defending champions were pushed to the absolute limit. Facing a resilient Chinese Taipei side, China PR dominated possession but found themselves frustrated by a "parked bus" defense and a disallowed VAR goal from star Wang Shuang in the 39th minute.

As the match bled into extra time, the tension at Perth Rectangular Stadium was palpable. However, the deadlock finally shattered in the 94th minute when Shao Ziqin turned provider to hero, slotting home a clinical finish. Despite a missed penalty later in the period, China secured the 2-0 win via a late own goal forced by a surging run from Jin Kun.

The victory keeps China's dream of a record-extending 10th title alive, though they will face a monumental task next: a semi-final showdown against the hosts, Australia, on Tuesday.

While China laboured, Korea Republic put on a masterclass in Sydney. Squaring off against Uzbekistan, the Koreans left nothing to chance, dismantling their opponents in a 6-0 rout.

Son Hwa-yeon opened the floodgates just nine minutes in, and the momentum never shifted. By the time the final whistle blew at Stadium Australia, the Koreans had not only secured a semi-final berth but sent a terrifying message to the rest of the field. They now await the winner of tomorrow’s clash between Japan and the Philippines to see who they will battle for a spot in the Grand Final.

Beyond the continental trophy, the stakes are global. By reaching the semi-finals, China and Korea Republic have officially qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

For the losing quarter-finalists, hope isn't entirely lost. Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan will move into the play-off round on March 19th, fighting for the final direct Asian slots to Brazil.
