Bangkok United Survives Stags' Siege to Reach Historic Semi-Final

SINGAPORE - Under the bright lights of Jalan Besar Stadium, history was written in sweat and nerves. True Bangkok United has punched its ticket to the AFC Champions League Two (ACL2) semi-finals for the first time, but they had to endure a literal trial by fire to get there.

Despite a relentless second-leg comeback from Singapore’s Tampines Rovers, the Thai side clung to a 4-3 aggregate victory after a pulsating 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.

Bangkok United arrived in Singapore with a slim 2-1 lead from the first leg, and for a moment, it looked like they would stroll into the next round. The evergreen Teerasil Dangda silenced the home crowd in the 15th minute, showing clinical composure to put the visitors ahead.

But the "Stags" of Tampines Rovers have built a reputation for never knowing when they are beaten. Driven by a vocal home crowd, Trent Buhagiar the thorn in Bangkok's side throughout this series leveled the score in the 39th minute. While a late first-half strike from Ilias Alhaft restored Bangkok’s lead, the momentum had shifted.

The second half was a story of Singaporean grit. In the 71st minute, Koya Kazama sent the stadium into a frenzy, firing home an equalizer that made it 2-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.

One more goal would have sent the match into extra time. Tampines threw everything forward, peppering the Bangkok goal with crosses and desperate strikes. However, the Thai defense, led by veteran leadership, bent but did not break. When the final whistle blew, the relief on the Bangkok United bench was palpable.

Bangkok United now carries the hopes of Thai football into the final four, where a heavyweight clash against Japan’s Gamba Osaka awaits. For Tampines Rovers, the journey ends, but they depart the continental stage with heads held high after proving they can go toe-to-toe with the region's elite.
