Bangkok United Hold On for Vital Victory Over Tampines Rovers
PATHUM THANI, Thailand – Bangkok United took a narrow but significant step toward the AFC Champions League Two semi-finals on Thursday night, surviving a late red card to defeat Singapore’s BG Tampines Rovers 2-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.
In a match defined by clinical efficiency early on and a frantic defensive stand at the end, the "Angels" ensured they would head to Singapore with the advantage, though a late lifeline for the visitors has kept this tie very much alive.
Bangkok United wasted no time asserting their dominance in front of their home crowd. Exploiting early nerves in the Tampines backline, the hosts struck twice within the opening twenty minutes:
11' Goal (Bangkok): After a handling error by Stags goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari, Picha Autra recycled the ball for Nebojsa Kosovic, who turned it home to open the scoring.
18' Goal (Bangkok): The lead was doubled just seven minutes later when Picha Autra found the net himself, capping off a period of relentless pressure that threatened to turn the game into a rout.
Despite the early onslaught, Tampines Rovers who have enjoyed a "Cinderella" run in this year's competition refused to buckle. They tightened their defense and waited for their moment.
That moment arrived in the 80th minute. Bangkok defender Philipe Maia suffered a lapse in concentration, allowing Malta international Trent Buhagiar to steal the ball and slot home a crucial away goal. It was Buhagiar’s seventh goal of the campaign, moving him to the top of the tournament scoring charts.
The drama intensified just sixty seconds later when Maia, already on a yellow, was sent off for a second bookable offense. Down to ten men for the final ten minutes, Bangkok United was forced into a desperate defensive shell to protect their lead.
While Bangkok United will be frustrated to have conceded and lost a key defender for the return leg, they remain in the driver's seat. For Tampines, the late goal transforms the second leg from a daunting task into a manageable challenge.
The two sides will meet again on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore. With the away goal in their pocket and a home crowd behind them, the Stags will be dreaming of their first-ever ACL2 semi-final appearance.
